Get your hands dirty and make a real difference
Volunteering with the Friends of Horsham Park is one of the most rewarding ways to give something back to our community. You don’t need experience, qualifications, or even particularly green fingers. You just need a bit of time and a willingness to get stuck in.
We have two volunteer groups, each with their own character and schedule. Take a look and see which one suits you.
The Wednesday Gardening & Conservation Group
Our Wednesday Morning Group has been the beating heart of the Friends for years, contributing over a thousand hours of care to the park each year. We meet every Wednesday at 9:30am (9:00am in high summer) by the tool shed at the back of Chennels car park, off North Street (near the subway).
The group takes on planting, pruning and general conservation work, making practical improvements that everyone who visits the park can enjoy. All tools are provided, and the group welcomes volunteers of all ages, abilities and levels of horticultural knowledge.
If you’d like to join, or if you just want to find out a bit more, get in touch with Sally: [email protected]
The Ribbon Borders Volunteer Group
Running the full length of North Street, the Ribbon Borders are the longest herbaceous borders in Horsham, and designed to provide interest throughout the year, the borders put on a succession of colour and texture from April right through to winter: alliums, salvias and catmint give way to grasses, red hot pokers, verbena and crocosmia, before autumn crocus and Michaelmas daisies take over, and the tall grasses finally stand their ground through the winter frosts.
The Ribbon Borders Volunteer Group has been tending these beds since 2012, and many of the original gardeners are still part of the group today. They meet on the second Sunday of every month at 10am, at the entrance to the North Street car park.
The group is welcoming and inclusive, and nothing gives them more pleasure than a new face joining for the first time. You’re welcome to just turn up, but if you’d like to let them know you’re coming, or want to find out more first, contact David: [email protected].
