Cherry

Four cherry trees in blossom

Name: Cherry

Latin Name: Prunus ‘Spire’

What3Words Location: ///native.early.pound

Did you know?

Cherry blossom is short-lived. It usually lasts just one to two weeks, so it’s worth catching it while you can.

Information:

Cherry trees are among the first big signs that spring has arrived. In April, their branches fill with pink or white blossom, and the pavements beneath can look as if they’ve been dusted with confetti. Look closely at the bark, too. Many cherries have shiny, reddish-brown bark marked with horizontal stripes, which is easy to spot even in winter.

The blossom is an early source of nectar and pollen for bees and other insects emerging after winter. However, not all cherries are equally helpful to wildlife. Trees with simple, single flowers are best for pollinators, while very frilly, double blossoms can be harder for insects to reach.
